Even the Strong Need Help

On his second year of high school, Mateo experienced the separation of two of the most important people in his life. Not having experienced something of this magnitude before and not having resources readily available to him, he dealt with it in the best way he could on his own. Soon he learned that this was not enough. After overcoming this struggle, he made it his life's mission to provide spaces and resources in every school where students can have access to mental health and wellness resources. In the past year, he has been meeting with school officials and partners in his community to make this dream a reality at his High School. In the future, he plans to export this idea to every high school in the country.   Mateo Cisneros is a Junior at Colton High School. He is the president of the TED Ed Club, Track and Cross Country Manager, California State Assemblymember Eloise Reyes "Young Legislator," and Vice President of the Audio Video Club. Most recently, Mateo has becoming involved with the opening of a Wellness Center at his high school. This Wellness Center would service student who are experiencing depression, anxiety, loss, etc. His mission is to create a space where students can decompress, talk to a professional or a peer and get assistance with their physical or mental health issues within the comfort of their school community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
