The Meaning of X

As a young Hispanic American of Central American descent, Jorge grew up very confused about his race and ethnicity. For years, he struggled in defining his identity until he came across the idea of Chicanismo. Through the literature he read in his high school English class, he came to appreciate the color of his skin and embrace his heritage. Now, he is very proud of who he is and he's conscious of the rich history of the indigenous peoples of the Americas as well as his European descent. For Jorge, the letter X is the mystery that lies in everyone's identity that is waiting for it to be discovered.  Jorge is a Senior at Colton High School in California, USA. He is the president of the MECHA club and a member of the Mock Trial Team at his school. Jorge has worked hard to promote the philosophy of Chicanismo within his community. After graduation, he plans to become a Civil Rights Attorney. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
