Living in the Future

As a child, Lucy bought into everyone's expectations of her and aimed to please everyone around her. Reflecting back, she has learned that we all have the potential to live the lives of our dreams if we just "act as if..." Our brains are powerful beyond measure and they have the ability of making things come to past if we just believe in ourselves and relentlessly work towards accomplish our goals. In this talk, she will share examples of students in her classroom and how their determination led them to the success they were hoping for by just believing in themselves. In the same fashion, Lucy challenges all of us to believe in ourselves and others. Lucy is an English, Mock Trial, Academic Competition, and Public Speaking teacher at Colton High School in California, USA. She is also a mother, a fiance, and proud daughter. Lucy holds a BA in English from California State University San Bernardino and a Masters in English Literature from Cal Poly Pomona. In her 25 year tenure in education, she has served a diverse population of students that have inspired her through their own personal stories. My Superintendent Story

Jerry Almendarez attended Colton schools in his early years and eventually graduated from Colton High School. He then went to become a teacher and the principal of his Alma Mater. Now, proud Superintendent of the Colton Joint Unified School District, he recalls a story of a Colton High School student by the name of "Michael." This story promises to inspire and motivate those who at one point may have lost their way. Michael's story of redemption and relentless determination is a true example for all that no matter how many times we may fail, there is always a chance for success.  Jerry Almendarez was born in Colton California. He attended Colton schools during his early years and eventually graduating from Colton High School. He then went on to become a teacher and principal at his Alma Mater. Now proud Superintendent of the Colton Joint School District, Mr. Almendarez's mission is to inspire students that like him, have high goals and aspirations. The Other Side of Fear

What is your greatest fear? In this talk, Donna challenges you to explore your fears and look beyond that emotion to discover the benefits that lie on the other side. She will share her personal story of struggle dealing with managing difficult life situations and what she has learned from her mentors and people older than her.  Donna Robinson is the program manager for Colton Redlands Yucaipa Regional Occupational Program (ROP). She has managed the ROP courses in the Colton Joint Unified School District since 2013. She was a teacher for 18 years, teaching ROP Financial Services Occupations and Small Business Management. She has three sons, three grandchildren and three chocolate Labradors. She loves to travel and study history. Even the Strong Need Help

On his second year of high school, Mateo experienced the separation of two of the most important people in his life. Not having experienced something of this magnitude before and not having resources readily available to him, he dealt with it in the best way he could on his own. Soon he learned that this was not enough. After overcoming this struggle, he made it his life's mission to provide spaces and resources in every school where students can have access to mental health and wellness resources. In the past year, he has been meeting with school officials and partners in his community to make this dream a reality at his High School. In the future, he plans to export this idea to every high school in the country.   Mateo Cisneros is a Junior at Colton High School. He is the president of the TED Ed Club, Track and Cross Country Manager, California State Assemblymember Eloise Reyes "Young Legislator," and Vice President of the Audio Video Club. Most recently, Mateo has becoming involved with the opening of a Wellness Center at his high school. This Wellness Center would service student who are experiencing depression, anxiety, loss, etc. His mission is to create a space where students can decompress, talk to a professional or a peer and get assistance with their physical or mental health issues within the comfort of their school community. Turning Failure into Success

As a young women, Alex experienced success in high school. However, she had no idea what life had in store for her. Through a series of unfortunate family events, Alex struggled in College and eventually had to drop out. Now a candidate for a doctorate degree in Education, she is determined to teach students and people as a whole that success is possible, even when the unexpected tries to stop us.  Alexandra Buskirk teaches Advanced Placement Computer Science, Mathematics, and is the Activities Director at Colton High School. She is also a candidate for a doctorate degree in education. Throughout her life, Alex has experienced challenges that almost stopped her from achieving her dreams. However, through relentless determination, she has been able to overcome the challenges that life has thrown at her. The Case For Wellness in Schools

In today's schools, students are facing anxiety, depression, and stress. Even though educators are not licensed to provide therapy for students, the power of connection goes along way. In this talk, Antonio shares stories of how he grew up in a minority immigrant family and how this affected his self-esteem. It took one educator to believe in him for Antonio to appreciate his background, and see his potential.  Mr. Castro is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and the current Manager of the Department of Behavioral and Mental Health at the Colton Joint Unified School District (CJUSD). He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology/Ethnic Studies from California State University in San Bernardino in 2003, and obtained MSW degree in 2005. In 2014 he earned his License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW) and has been working in the field of mental health for the past 13 years.  His professional experiences include clinical practice with various outpatient populations including individual and group therapy with court mandated clients, marriage and family therapy, outpatient substance abuse counseling, and school based therapy with children and youth from K-12 grades. In his current role at CJUSD since 2016, Mr. Castro has worked  to establish a comprehensive  school based mental health program that includes a Clinical internship program for 20 Social Work interns from local Universities. Breaking Social Barriers

Since she was little, Anabel experienced racial separation even among members of her own race. Anabel was labeled and judged by her lighter colored skin even though she was born to two hispanic parents. As she matured, society and culture also constructed barriers of separation around her that kept her confined to her own race and ethnicity. In her talk, Anabel makes a call to action for all of us to unite under one race, the human race.  Anabel is a student at Colton High School and member of her school's TED Ed Club. Since she was little she experienced racial separation first hand; even among members of her own ethnicity. In this first experience with TEDx, she shares her vision for a world without racial barriers. The Meaning of X

As a young Hispanic American of Central American descent, Jorge grew up very confused about his race and ethnicity. For years, he struggled in defining his identity until he came across the idea of Chicanismo. Through the literature he read in his high school English class, he came to appreciate the color of his skin and embrace his heritage. Now, he is very proud of who he is and he's conscious of the rich history of the indigenous peoples of the Americas as well as his European descent. For Jorge, the letter X is the mystery that lies in everyone's identity that is waiting for it to be discovered.  Jorge is a Senior at Colton High School in California, USA. He is the president of the MECHA club and a member of the Mock Trial Team at his school. Jorge has worked hard to promote the philosophy of Chicanismo within his community. After graduation, he plans to become a Civil Rights Attorney. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. As the instructor, I believe it is my job to put the tools in the hands of the students and show them how to utilize these tools to effectively tell their stories. I have always had a passion for telling stories visually, through the medium of film and video, and I am thrilled to be able to share this passion with my students . My background includes a Bachelor's Degree in Radio/TV/Film from California State University, Fullerton and over 25 years experience working on many major network television shows, feature films, commercials and music videos. During the past three years at REV, the students and I have built this video production program from the ground up and are still in the process of refining and perfecting our vision of a fun, creative and nurturing environment in which each student can unleash their own unique creative genius!

Redlands East Valley High School and the Colton, Redlands, Yucaipa Regional Occupational Program offer beginning and advanced classes in digital video production. Students learn all facets of movie making from pre-production, production and post production. All projects are produced with professional, broadcast quality equipment including, Canon C100 cameras, Adobe Creative Suite and Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve software. The classroom is also equipped with it's own television studio, TV Studio master control room and color grading suite that utilize Blackmagic cameras, equipment and software.
